HDMI is the world's most common audio-video interface — but not all HDMI cables are equal. Version numbers, bandwidth ratings, cable lengths, and connector types all affect what you can see and hear. Here's everything you need to know.
Walk into any electronics store and you'll find HDMI cables ranging from $3 to $150. Marketing claims promise "Ultra HD", "4K", "8K", "High Speed", and "Premium Certified" — often with little explanation of what those terms actually mean. Meanwhile, a cable too long for your installation can silently degrade your picture, and one too old for your gear can cap your resolution without any warning at all.
This guide cuts through the noise: what the versions actually deliver, what cable length does to your signal, which connector type belongs where, and how to buy smart without overspending.

HDMI has evolved dramatically since its 2002 debut. Each version increased bandwidth, added features, and unlocked higher resolutions and refresh rates. Understanding which version you need starts with knowing what you want to display.

Many TVs and monitors labelled "HDMI 2.1" only implement a subset of the spec — particularly at 40Gbps rather than the full 48Gbps. Always check the device's manual for the actual supported bandwidth, especially for high-refresh gaming.

Cable Speed Ratings
The HDMI Licensing Administrator publishes official cable speed categories. These are the terms you should actually look for on packaging — not marketing phrases like "Ultra HD Cable" or "Gaming HDMI".

The "Premium High Speed HDMI" label requires a holographic authentication label from the HDMI Forum. If a cable claims this certification but has no certification chip or label, treat it as unverified. Look for the HDMI Forum's official QR code on the packaging.
03 · CABLE LENGTHS
Cable Length & Signal Integrity
This is where the real-world problems begin. HDMI transmits high-frequency digital signals over copper conductors, and as cable length increases, those signals degrade. Beyond a certain distance, you may see image noise, flickering, dropped frames, or total loss of signal — even if the cable physically fits.
There is no official maximum cable length in the HDMI specification. Instead, the spec defines electrical signal requirements, and it's up to the cable manufacturer to meet them within a given length. In practice, however, the laws of physics impose real limits.

Higher bandwidth versions are far more sensitive to cable length. A 10m cable might pass 1080p perfectly but fail completely at 4K 60Hz HDR. Never assume a cable that worked at lower specs will work when you upgrade your display or source device.

05 · SPECIAL FEATURES
ARC, eARC & Other Features
ARC — AUDIO RETURN CHANNEL
ARC (introduced in HDMI 1.4) allows a TV to send audio back upstream to a soundbar or AV receiver over the same HDMI cable — eliminating the need for a separate optical audio cable. It supports compressed audio formats like Dolby Digital 5.1 and DTS, but not lossless formats like Dolby TrueHD or Dolby Atmos in their full uncompressed form.
EARC — ENHANCED AUDIO RETURN CHANNEL
eARC arrives with HDMI 2.1 and dramatically expands the return channel bandwidth from 1Mbps to 37Mbps. This unlocks full uncompressed Dolby TrueHD, Dolby Atmos, and DTS:X — the same lossless audio that was previously only possible via a direct HDMI connection from a Blu-ray player. If you're investing in a high-end soundbar or AV receiver, eARC is the feature that makes it worth it.
VRR — VARIABLE REFRESH RATE
VRR, exclusive to HDMI 2.1, lets a gaming console or GPU vary the frame rate dynamically, synchronising with the display to eliminate screen tearing without the input lag of V-Sync. PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, and modern gaming GPUs all support VRR. You need both an HDMI 2.1 source and an HDMI 2.1 display to benefit.
ALLM — AUTO LOW LATENCY MODE
ALLM allows a game console to automatically signal the TV to switch into its lowest-latency "Game Mode" — no manual menu diving required. It works on HDMI 2.0b and later.
CEC (Consumer Electronics Control) has been part of HDMI since version 1.0. It's the standard that lets one remote control multiple devices — though manufacturers implement it under proprietary names: Samsung Anynet+, Sony Bravia Sync, LG SimpLink, Panasonic VIERA Link. Behaviour can be inconsistent across brands even on the same HDMI cable.
06 · BUYING GUIDE
What to Actually Buy
The honest truth: for most people, a £10–£15 certified Premium High Speed cable covers virtually every real-world use case — including 4K HDR at 60Hz, Dolby Vision, and full Atmos via eARC (as long as the TV supports it via HDMI 2.1). You don't need to spend more than that for a 1–3m run.
Where you should spend more is on cable quality for longer runs or if you need Ultra High Speed (48Gbps) for 4K @ 120Hz or 8K content. In those cases, brand and certification matter — a sub-standard cable may pass 4K at 60Hz but fail silently at 120Hz, dropping to a lower refresh rate without telling you.

The Bottom Line
HDMI is deceptively complex beneath its familiar rectangular plug. Version numbers dictate bandwidth ceilings; cable quality determines whether you reach them; and length is the silent killer that can rob you of resolution, HDR, or refresh rate without a single error message.
The good news: for most home setups, a short run with a certified Premium High Speed cable solves everything. The complications arise at the extremes — high refresh rates, long distances, and professional installations — and that's where understanding the spec pays off.
